Hrm, apparently they can breed in fresh water, as per

(cool pictures of about a bajillion baby snails).  But the poster also
notes that she has them in 50 tanks or so, and has seen babies in one.

I have now also found two posts of people mentioning them eating live
shrimp, but both were put in the context of isolated incidents.  (ie, one
sick/old/dying shrimp, and none after that).  My shrimp outpace my fish,
even in tanks where they are actively targeted as food, so I think they
can live with the snails...and I actually plan on putting them in my
shrimp tanks first...
