Re: [GSAS-Member] Hair Algae (was Excel? Glut?)

Hi Shango,

Glutaraldehyde is the active ingredient in Flourish Excel. Flourish Excel
(not Flourish Comprehensive) is used as an alternative to using CO2 gas in a
planted tank to provide the carbon that plants need to grow. Excel also has
been found to have algaecide properties. Apparently this knowledge has been
around awhile but I found out about it at the GSAS talk by Luis Navarro last
spring. Here are a couple of posts with more information:

It took some digging, but I was able to find a website in India where an
analysis was done of Excel. It was determined that Excel contained a 1.5%
concentration of Glutaraldehyde. Excel costs about $10 per liter ($20 for a
two liter) plus shipping on line and more if purchased locally. A liter of
50% concentration Glut, which makes 33.333 liters of 1.5% concentration,
costs about $56 including freight and Hazmat charges. That equates to about
$1.70 per liter. Hope this helps! Roy
