There was just a special on Animal Planet I think about frogs. The yellow-legged frog in the mountains of California is dying due to a fungus which is thickening their skin. Connie, I had to laugh when I read your post about the frogs. Erik and I were talking tonight and wondered if we had a minature bullfrog version. They are still tiny, eating lots of flies and crickets. Markus talked me out of bath tonight just so he could stay up and watch them eat the fruitflies he fed them. By the way if anyone needs some M. Hydei (or whatever the name is on the large flightless fruit flies) we have an abundance right now and certainly could give some to anyone wanting to start a culutre. Just come on by asap. We are now feeding the frogs flies twice a day from two cultures and the flies numbers show no sign of decreasing. (now that compared to last week when I had to buy crickets to feed because we didn't have enought flies, I will stagger cultures more next time). I did just check the website, and so far they are looking like bullfrogs...but it is amazing how close some of the species are. http://www.californiaherps.com/noncal/northwest/nwfrogs/nwfrogs.html I have had some folks say the only difference between bullfrogs and green frogs is the ridge. Leopard frogs/red legged frogs...etc I think have dropped off the list. Still interesting to see and talk about. Great education for the kids. They now know about good frogs and bad frogs and why they could never be let go. In the meantime they are quite determinded to keep "midget" Markus' frog and "bat frog", or the latest name "scrunch bat frog" Isaaks frog as along as possible. We have a total of 6 in the tank. Two lighter color morphs and 4 that are almost black with mottled bellies. Interesting. Keep me informed what all of you guys think they are? Kathy ps...the boys didn't like the idea of eating them, but they were quite amendable to finding a local establishment with herons or large frog eating birds as an option.
