I lost one small pond with a couple very small koi when the container cracked! The other container has a small koi or maybe shabukin that has weathered several years outside and several periods of being frozen in. It is about a 30gallon round fiberglass container After the other container cracked I got worried and drilled through the ice, it was about 5" thick at least - this was before the "big storm" Saturday so I drilled a bigger hole and put a 50 watt heater set on it's lowest setting in there. When I looked yesterday it was frozen up pretty well but the heater still moved. In my experience as long as they have some free water koi and goldfish do ok in an iced over container. My other small pond has a pump disturbing the water so it has a spot unfrozen. The birds are quite happy to have access to water. I had some white clouds (?) in there in the summer but I could not find any this fall after the racoons got through tearing up the pond. So no fish to worry about there.
