Re: [GSAS-Member] Salmon diving

Picnic speaker? :)

The club did at least once have a speaker in the middle of the summer, because the guy was a big-shot magazine columnist and contacted US about speaking. It was OK.

I like the current summer break (with picnic) format but anything is possible.
Oliver could also fill out a normal run at the Seattle Aquarium on his own!

Hi Connie,

WOW, this would be awesome!!!!

The only problem is that GSAS doesnt' meet during July/Aug. He was hoping to
do something when he was down to talk with the club.

Do they ever fish during these times in June or Sept? Any ideas for then. Or
Paul, do we want to do a special summer meeting? (sounds a little crazy
but....)

HI Kathy,

I might be able to help with this; I have friends, that I myself have fished
with, on Lummi Island that commercially fish for sockeye using reefnet gear;
the old-school and most eco-friendly commercial fishing out there. In this
style, the gear is just two stationary boats and a net. The boats are
anchored to the bottom and the schools of fish must swim up a man-made
*reef* (also anchored to the bottom and out in front of the barges), then
in-between the barges, AND be spotted in time by fishers hanging out on
ladders on top of the barges, in order to actually be caught. Since the
boats are anchored in very specific places each year and are relatively
close to shore, these are the perfect folks for him to contact. That is, IF
your friend is OK with the whole concept of a sustainable fishery in the
first place, which for the record, I definitely am. As for WHEN, high
season in the Fraser River salmon run, the closest and largest to us and
what my Lummi friends are fishi!
ng, is late July to early August. And there is always the regulatory website -
the Pacific Salmon Commision - www.psc.org - here can be found lots more info
on the whole subject of Fraser River fishery management, particularly the
Sockeye. And on second thought, your friend might be able to legally get in
the Fraser River itself somehow...but that would take some digging to find out
how and where.

I have taken tons of pics out there on the gears (although none from the
salmon point of view, only mine), and I am sure there are fishers who would
let him on the boats, especially on the *off* days, ie when the PSC says *no
fishing*, which is WAY more often than not even during the season. If they
are lucky they get about 5 days of actual fishing, and that is it.

Any other questions let me know or have him email me offline.

Cheers,

Connie

Subject: [GSAS-Member] Salmon diving

Hi all,

Oliver Lucanus, is a really interesting speaker the club has been talking
to for a few years about coming to speak, and he asked me about diving and
photographing salmon runs.

Does anyone know anything about what time or year, location, etc would be
best for diving and photo/videoing salmon?

Any suggestions are appreciated and I will pass it onto Oliver.

Thanks
Kathy
