Take a piece of  nylon from a stocking and fit it over the intake to the 
filter.  Use a rubber band to keep it from getting sucked into the filter. 
Wont impede flow and will keep your shrimp safe.  Your going to have to keep 
it from gathering "muck" but its better than loosing shrimp.  Just be glad 
your not raising marine shrimp, the young would fit through thte nylon.
