For what it is worth, My first batch was brand X from the Fish Store in pill 
form which worked great (ie nuke the tank, wait until gone, reseed with dirty 
filter from other tank).  When I ran out I got the more conventional Maracyn.  
The new packets are annoying and take many more to do the job.  YMMV
