Shango cuttlebone is cuttlefish bone, a hard internal structure found in cuttlefish. It's a buoancy chamber in those creatures. It's mainly made up of calcium carbonate, so as it slowly dissolves, it keeps up your CaCO3 levels. It's a good low tech low work way to give shrimp (or your trumpet snails) calcium for their hard parts. You can also just buy CaCO3, add it, and monitor your water hardness. More of a pain in the butt, but you have more control. Cuttlefish bone is used as a chew toy / mineral supplement for birds and turtles, so it's available at pet shops/ Drs. Foster & Smith and they're cheap.
