Hi Michael, You can do either. As you suspect they are plantlets. Its 
one way for the plant to reproduce itself. As soon as you think the 
plantllets are big enough for you to handle easily you can 'separate' 
and replant them. Or you can cut off the stringer and throw it away, or 
leave it alone and eventually it will deteriorate and reintroduce its 
nutrients back into your tank.
