I have to say, I've raised comets from birth and some turned gold and stayed that way. And others turned gold and then completely white. I've also had a few adult goldfish that never turned gold, but stayed a brownish-olive color. Based on the literature the gold color has been selected for over hundreds of years in Asia. And if left alone over just a few generations the fish will revert back to its dull brown-olive color.
