Re: [GSAS-Member] Goldfish in the Wild
Cute!
I was at Twin Lakes today and noticed a orange thing in the water. I
thought it was garbage, until it started moving. Turns out it is a
large comet goldfish that hangs out with the other fish of similar
size, namely the bass. Loads of Japanese Trapdoor snails.
I've had several snails in my aquarium for a month which only eat
algae and muck, and I have none so I've feed them dried seaweed. I'll
bring some to the next meeting and I would only like one or two per
tank. They give live birth to huge snail babies and you can tell the
difference between the girl and boy snails between the adults.
Sometimes they "sleep" or occasionally shovel themselves into the
substrate. They can survive outside in a pond provided it doesn't
freeze solid. The snails are several years old by my guess. I was told
they only live for a year, for a website said 2-3 years. I think these
snails are at least that, and if they die at all, I didn't see any
evidence of it in the lake. No snail shells anywhere, but lots of clam
shells ins certain areas.
I could also get some small mystery fish from the lake if anyone wants
to start a native tank. There's Bluegill, Bass, Peacock fish and
Perch. Today I tried to feed them krill which they ignored, but seemed
interested in me and stared at me. I had an audience of several large
bass, and apparently the goldfish was circling me, as I was told from
the people on shore. I saw a VERY large crawdad which was the only
thing that would eat the krill. Next time I will try worms.
