Re: [GSAS-Member] Coralife Light that Sizzled

Shango,

How much is peace of mind worth to you? For me, I would junk the parts and
find a better way....something that will not allow moisture into it or is not
impacted by moisture if that is what you suspect was the culprit. The concern
I have is what if you arent around the next time it smokes and it does more
than smoke? I had a light fixture catch on fire on a salt water tank, and woke
up to black smoke filling my room from the top of the aquarium trim burning.
That was enough for me, I ditched the whole thing and started out with
something else.

So, the point being you have to assess your own personal safety level and
determine if it is acceptable. Its kind of like jumping out of an airplane, if
you've done it and survived you may be willing to do it again. If you havent
jumped and arent sure, I would imagine you would hesitate to do it. If you are
like me, and know that two feet on the terra firma is better than flying like a
rock through the sky, you will most likely never jump. Everyone has a different
level of excitement and safety they are willing to work within. Where is yours?

Subject: [GSAS-Member] Coralife Light that Sizzled

Hi friends,

I have a Coralife compact fluorescent light that hold a single 65w bulb. Last
week, I was in the room and it started to sizzle and smoked just a touch at the
end where the bulb plugs in. I unplugged it.

Now, I have written off the bulb but now don't know what to do with it. How do
I know the base is toasted? Could it have just been the bulb dying? Did some
water splash at just the wrong place?

Those bulbs at $30 so I hesitate to buy one just to try it out. How likely is
it that if I buy another bulb it will work?

Any suggestions on how to weigh this out would be helpful. I'd love to just go
buy another bulb and have everything be OK.

Thanks
Shango
