Wow! I just got home and enjoyed the long string of posts regarding the sizzling light. Based on the wonderful analysis, this is what I am going to do... 1. I very much agree with the idea that getting a new light is the smartest move for safety. If it was 6 months ago, that is what I would most likely do. I have zero electrical experience and so would normally default to this. However, I am on a fixed budget for a few more months while finishing this education phase of life so cost savings are important. I would probably let that tank sit without a light for that time if this one is really dead. With that in mind, I am going to take Erik up on his offer to take a look at it to see if it is something obvious to fix or maybe it doesn't need fixing at all. At the minimum I will know what to say to Coralife when I call them if it is busted. I will make a donation to the club in his honor and do him a good turn when I can. 2. I do not think it was a water issue. That was just mentioned as something plausible. It is an open top tank so technically a fish could have made a serious splash...but that is a long shot. My money is on a purely wiring issue. The light is only three years old though. Thanks everyone for your earnest assistance in helping me sort this out.
