I'm rather a fan of the Hagen/Nutrafin "natural system" ladder-like
diffusers, because they're darned simple. You can buy just the so-called
"bubble-counter", by itself, which is a reactor that works in the tank
without any external pumps or powerheads. For instance:

Its achilles heel is snails getting into the ladder, but otherwise is
cheap and stable.
