I tried out Elodea in 2008 when I was rearing koi fry from Steev's first koi grow-out contest. I got it from a mailorder place with a Vallisneria spp. that was supposed to be hardy. I had some 10g tanks outside on my metal plant table on the patio which got partial sun. I'd stuck the sprigs into plastic pots I filled with garden soil with red lava rock gravel overlayer. At first they struggled, but once they rooted, they started going nuts and I had to trim and fill rubbermaid containers with the stuff (I had daphnia growing in those tubs as well). But I quickly learned, once winter came, that this strain was NOT hardy (sigh)....so I no longer have Elodea (or the Vallisneria). I really did nothing special with it that summer. I probably had whiteclouds, goldfish fry or baby koi in all the containers with Elodea. Also had pond snails. Betty Goetz > Hi Betty, > > Thanks for the info!
