Not anesthesize. Euthanize. It's a well known way to kill a fish :-(

There's a product called Hypno that's been used for decades with shipping fish.

I've received shipments of fish (cichlids usually) that have been 'hypno'd' It 
does indeed work like the article says, though IMHO, one fish per bag, starve 
them, clean water + poly filter in each bag, and you don't need it. You need 
hypno when you're crowding them.
