This seems to be the best schedule I have seen in years! And I've been a member since my son was in Kindergarten...this year he is a Junior in College and off to Africa for a Semester! -Don Rudee ________________________________ From: Shango Los <shango@shangolos.com> To: Greater Seattle Aquarium Society member chat <gsas-member@thekrib.com> Sent: Wed, January 6, 2010 9:22:36 AM Subject: [GSAS-Member] 2010 Speaker Schedule Dear Members, We are proud to say that the Club has booked an amazing roster of speakers for 2010. As the Club continues to get on more firm financial ground, we are able to supplement our schedule with speakers from out of town and bring new insights and approaches to the hobby we are so passionate about. While a good deal of last year leaned on the theoretical, this year we are getting concrete with a variety of speakers covering specific global regions, breeding techniques and rare species. The list of speakers this year boasts decades of aquarist experience and good humor too. Here is a summary of the first half of the year! January 12th, 2010: Our new friends in the Vancouver Aquatic Hobbyist Club (www.fishopolis.com/VAHC) have introduced us to Jennifer Reynolds of the Vancouver, BC Aquarium. She is their new Senior Biologist who just returned from an extensive collection and study trip to Africa. She will be coming down to show us slides and share stories of Lake Tanganyika as well as give us a sneak peek at the Vancouver Aquariums new Lake Tanganyika exhibit. Yes, there will be some Free Passes to the Aquarium in the raffle! (www.visitvanaqua.org) February 9th, 2010: Our annual Plant Auction promises to our biggest yet with more plants of greater variety than ever. The Club will be bringing in some rarities through our wholesale connections and Club members can be relied on to delight and surprise with what comes out of our own tanks. You can bring your own quality plants for sale or donation as well. This is one of the Clubs two main fundraisers of the year. The Plant Sale can always be counted on for smoking deals on both young and established plants. March 9th, 2010: A meeting in two acts! Act One consists of photos, video and anecdotes from this years Home Show. Follow along as the judges regale us with inspiring stories and haphazard shenanigans while we view each others tanks. In Act Two, new member Jeff Schulstrom will break down how our favorite and newly known Cichlid breeds find their way from Africa into our tanks. This talk promises to shed light on how our aquatic friends are collected, cared for and cleared through customs. April 17th, 2010: This SATURDAY meeting is our big event of the year as we hold the General Auction. Come find spectacular buys on fish, plants and gear. Bring your own quality aquarium supplies to donate or sell. This is a hilarious event filled with good cheer, bad jokes and lots of stuff you wish was in your tank. Come enjoy the friendly competitive spirit of a live auction! May 11th, 2010: Delving deeper into the wondrous world of Cichlids, Ad Konings will be focusing specifically on the nature and habits of "sand dwellers" from Lake Tanganyika, the African Great Lake. Ad Konings is owner of the publishing house Cichlid Press and has many publications to his credit including Celebrating Cichlids from Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika. Bring your questions because you don;t get a shot at someone like this very often! June 8th, 2010: The Club is very proud to present Wayne Leibel. Wayne is known for his two popular columns, "Wayne's New World", which appears monthly in Tropical Fish Hobbyist, and "Goin' South - Cichlids of the Americas", published in Aquarium Fish Magazine. Wayne is an expert in Western Hemisphere Cichlids and approaches the topic from more of an aquarists view than a scientist. His warm and fun presentation will focus on the speciation and hybridization of Cichlid species. We will let you know as soon as we have the second half of the year booked. As always, these great speakers are brought to you thanks to your membership fees and auction donations. If your membership has expired, this is a great time to renew your membership using our easy web renewal. Membership is only $15. You know where you can do it: www.gsas.org Thanks for participating and we will see you January 12th for Jennifer Reynolds from the Vancouver Aquarium!
