If your ammonia has zeroed out you either have a Nitrite problem now, or you
don't. Did you test for it?

After more than ten days the amonia in my new tank has finally zeroed out
(fortunately without any notable distress to the fish after my original loss
of three cardinals) but I am now worrying about a nitrite spike in my near
future. If anyone would be so kind as to bring some used filter material (or
whatever else would provide nitrite consuming bacteria) to the meeting
tomorrow night it would be greatly appreciated.
