In the wild they will rise up and the small fish will accidently swim under their disc and then its all over! So far my neons seem to be from the smarter side of the fence!

 even the neons appear safe, I watched the whole school come up and swim right in front of him without peril; 

 

I'm actually surprised that he could catch a neon if he tried.  They are so fast and he is so big.  I;d figure even just his flutter would push them out of striking distance.
