RE: PrizeDistribution... Take 2....

The figures I posted several days ago obviously lost most of you, and to
tell the truth they didn't help me much either... I have since posted the
individual prizes and their estimated values which we have to distibute, so
that you can all see the task I/we face. But anyone thinking that just
seeing that list of "goodies" will make things easy is in for a shock.

I really think that in order for this to be fair, we have to work out some
sort of proportional scheme which considers the number of entrants in each
category. The suggestion I made the other day was a start, but upon
reflection I don't think that it goes far enough. For example, the "Aquatic
Gardens - Small" category was treated the same (regarding prize valuation)
as the "Aquatic Garden - Large and Medium" categories, even though there are
only 8 entries in the Aquatic Garden - Small category.

I think that the scheme I originally proposed would leave me (and by
extension, us) open to charges of favouring Aquatic Gardens over other types
of aquascapes.

So..... back to the calculator......

This time around, I took the number of entries in EACH Category (earlier I
had done it by CLASS), added them up and then by simple division, came up
with a ratio which I then multiplied by the total dollar value of the prizes
we have to distribute. this resulted in "Ideal 1" in the table below. As the
values of the actual merchandise we have does not necessarily match this
figure, I next rounded these figures either up or down to the nearest
logical figure. That brought me to "Ideal 2". The dollar values in "Ideal 2"
represent an ideal weighted portion of the total prize pool, depending
solely upon the number of entries within the Category (and thus, the amount
of competition faced within that Category).

But it is rare to award the same dollar value prize for win, place and show
in anything, so I subtracted 1/3 of the amount from the 3rd place winner and
added the same amount to the 1st place winners. This hopefully provides for
some variation within each Category, depending upon whether the prize is for
1st, 2nd or 3rd place winners.

I would appreciate it if you could look at this scheme and tell me if you
think it is fair and reasonable. Please DON'T make reference to the actual
prizes and their values yet. It is going to be VERY difficult to shoehorn
the actual prizes into any scheme unless we are all agreed on how the scheme
should work in the abstract first. For example, it might not be possible to
make all of the "prize packages" both appropriate AND exactly matching the
dollar figures shown here. My aim is to come as close as possible, but I
can't guarantee that some might be out by $5.00 or $10.00, either up or down
when I start plugging actual merchandise into the equation.

Dollar Value Available for Distribution = $2619.50
