Re: [AGA-mcm] RE: [AGA-Contest] followup on Amano documents (fwd)

Okay. So, that's not an unreasonable cost for the pics. However, if we do have over 120 entrants, that comes out to be over $600 in printing cost alone. I don't know if that's really cost effective, although it would be quite impressive. I still say we go with the 8X10 pics and do the cheaper printing or print on our own computer. Unfortunately, I'm stuck for the time being since I'm in the process of getting a new computer, so the samples are on the old computer. Old one finally choked and died on me this past week. Ugh. :-( Once I get the files transfered to my computer at work, I'll be sending some examples around for everyone's perusal and suggestions.

Hi Bailin,

If you do a bulk purchase from Dot Photo, you can get 11x14's at $5 each.
(purchased in blocks of 10) The web address is:

http://www.dotphoto.com/printplans.asp?TabLoc=4

Their print quality is quite good. Not as good as if I do all my own
tweaking on a good, photo printer at home, but very presentable, and larger
than I can print at home!

Boy! That's a great number for the contest. I'm glad I'm not judging
this
year. Anyways, good to hear about the cost on the printing. I haven't
been
able to locate any place that prints larger photos for under $7. So, I
think we either go the route of the 8.5X11 pictures or print on our
printers. It's the most cost effective way of doing this. If that's the
case, we need to think about layout and number of pictures to include in
each picture. With an 8.5X11 print, I suggest we go with one picture and
a
short description. I can do a couple of sample layouts and we can decide
from there. We need to make a decision soon since the convention isn't
that
far away.

[For those on aga-contest... to bring you up-to-date, Amano's "people"
(Hayakawa-san) finally returned my e-mail of a week ago, and requested I
send them hard-copy of all the entries for judging. Was up until 1 AM
last
night writing something to automate the generation of "pages" for each
entry, and requested extra AGA cash to pay for it all.]

Bought a bunch of inkjet carts today, and was able to easily print 103 of
the 124 pages in a couple of hours. I'm very pleased with the results --
it definitely shows off the aquascapes well. It also shows off the flaws
in the low-resolution submissions, but that can't be helped.

My printer uses individual color cartridges, and I've run through 5
already
on this job. I had to stop only because I went through two yellows and
didn't think to buy a third! Yesterday's estimate actually was pretty
good... 6 carts x $13 + $25 worth of paper is a little over $100.

The shipping is going to truly suck, though. 4lbs of anything to Japan
costs in the $70's if I go with DHL or UPS, so I'm going to use USPS
priority or air mail most likely, which is more like $25-30. It'll all
go
out tomorrow. Yay, good to get this one finished.

A side point of all this work in the last 24 hours is that I now have a
nifty little tool to generate automatic page layouts (the final product
is
a 124-page PDF). I may run this with the copyright-burned images so that
someone who buys the CD and wants to spend $100 on ink and paper can
print
out "their own" AGA Contest 2004 Book! (I am also now pretty confident
that I (or anyone with a nice photo printer) could do the official 8x10's
for the convention for under $150...just one more piece of data for
Bailin.)
