Votes would only be counted from those returning ballots. The two most successful hobby organizations are the AKA and the ACA, both with more than 1500 members. Both of these non profit HOBBY organizations hold open elections every year for their board of directors. The organizations you mention, Karen, I believe are all professionally run (ie, by a paid group of directors), not volunteer based hobby organizations. I belong to several or those type organizations as well, and would not even think of voting for the professionals that lead those type organizations. Unless someone knows something they're not telling, the AGA is just a group of like minded hobbyists, and I have no problem with asking them to vote for their leaders. And every company that I own shares of stock in sends me a ballot every year to vote for the members of the board who are up for election. As far as some lunatic getting enough people to vote for him/her, and taking control of the organization, well, I suppose that is possible. The AKA and the ACA have had their share of poor leadership. But they have survived. And, dare I say, thrived. The problem with those types is that they quickly loose interest in their cause of the day and move on. The real hobbyists and people who are interested in the organization stick around and the organization survives. It is only when the leadership allows itself to get an inflated idea of it's own importance, and allows personal conflicts to enter into business dealings of the organization, that real problems occur. I have seen that happen in a few clubs, and they usually fold. And with a non-voting structure, how do we replace several people when they up and quit due to something like that? What about having an incompetent leader? Who is going to tell them they aren't capable of doing the job, if that leader is the one who appoints everyone else? At least with a term of two years, they won't be there forever. And what about the membership? Shouldn't they be able to say who will be spending THEIR club's money? Paul, you can have some of our rain! About 12 miles from here they had 14'' of rain in just a few hours!
