Though the results themselves won't be available to submit for publication November 30th, we might be able to present some of the pictures and a pointer to the website for the lowdown. As a mere listing of winners to me would seem wasted space in PAM, perhaps this would be more interesting, and allow a "best-of-both-worlds?" I thought TAG would have the first coverage of the contest. It is, after all, an AGA sponsored event. The above suggestion seems to me to compromise what I thought we had already agreed to. I have limitations as editor of TAG that I have to live with and work with. The same is true for Dave. We don't have the money for 20 pages of color in TAG, and his publishing schedule is such that the contest as news will be old news. That's life. He has to learn to adjust to his limitations as I have learned to adjust to mine. Regarding what James about our being able to print only a few pictures of the winners, I think we can do better than that. I am in the process of getting quotes. After I get the quotes, we need to have a serious money conversation. What we really need is a budget. A problem for me is that I don't really know how much I can spend. > Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 18:39:14 -0800 (PST) > From: Erik Olson <erik@thekrib.com> > Subject: Update > > OK, sorry, I said I'd be quiet, but one last bit of information: > > Just got off the phone with Dave; it was funny, because I'd just sent that last reply, and was telling Kathy I should call and say "Hey, we're your author here. He's also OK with not announcing results, I think. He still does not yet comprehend exactly what the showcase entails (eg, no idea that it's all on the web, features often lush descriptions by > the aquascape creators, or that the whole thing is already basically DONE but for the judging). > > So where do we go now: What *he'd* like to do (the "offer") is for me to send him a CD with all of the showcase "images", and he can pick out which ones he wants for the two-page spread. Personally, I think that's preposterous (but that's Dave for ya), so what *I* think we should do ("counter-offer") is pre-select some nice images *ourselves* that are representative of the diversity and print well in color, write up some caption and article material, and submit them. Perhaps, give him a little extra so that he can choose, say, five photos out of seven? > > But as I said in the last note, I'm going to listen to others now. Mainly gotta hear what James and Mary want to do; yes, I realize Mary is taking a break for a couple days, so maybe just a "sounds good" or "no way eh!" would be enough from her No way!!! Erik, after all the hard work I put into TAG, I think you owe me the courtesy of running these offers by me before you talk to Dave about them. I am tired of Dave's abrasive tactics. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Dave needs us a lot more than we need him. If he wants to track down various people who won the contest and do articles, that's his business. But as far as offering him material is concerned, it's an AGA sponsored contest and TAG should get first picks. Remember that Dave has money to pay people which we don't. Also, I would like to call your attention to how diligently I have beat the bushes to come up with articles without the enticement of money. Mary
