Erik and AGA Board,I am gathering that you see a larger purpose to a general "gallery" thanjust the annual convention pictures. If so, please reply with particulars, 'cause I think the board was also under the >impression we were just talking convention pictures. My intentions are not to push my luck here but rather give constructive feedback. I wasn't suggesting full-blown AGA Forum but rather invest some time on little project - Gallery which could turn out to be important, at least in my opinion. Newest generation of Aqua Hobbyists is very sensitive when it comes to visual effects. I see online Communities struggling just because their Graphic User Interface is not user friendly and lacks creativity. At the same time the less "messy", the more professional. I guess one needs to find that balance. People like to see pictures, put faces with names/nicknames, see aquarium setups and good quality photography work. Internet is extremely powerful tool and it could become very successful if used properly.
I guess what I'm looking for are what specific ideas you have in mind other than organizing the convention pictures. The convention pictures do indeed fulfil an important role of assigning names to faces, showing those who couldn't make it what happened, getting others excited about attending next year's event, etc.
What I'm trying to say here is that paper / internet advertising strategies are equally important nowadays. The more user friendly, the better for website and AGA organization. Convention Gallery is perfectly fine and above suggestions are long term ideas !!!
Right, that's exactly what I'm suggesting. Let us start with something not-too-complex, but better organized than my quick-n-dirty show, for this November's convention pictures. Then, we can go from there. But I think the convention should be the first trial.
Here's where I'm coming from (and this is just my opinion, not as a board representative or anything...just the way I think).. I am a major proponent of having the CONTENT before talking about building the display case. I don't like websites that have big optimistic empty spaces for future content (the epitome of which is the wretched "under construction" logo). And I've seen one after another local fish or plant club's website with the infamous "Gallery" section that has two or three "member tanks" but otherwise lots of empty space.
So I'm always going to be leery of talking about adding new framework to the existing website to house...at this point...nothing.
I was told that Erik and Board are usually looking for detail descriptions when it comes to new project especially one which has WebSite as main subject. I'm not giving up on my ideas, yet. New guy on the block doesn't mean new and useless ideas :).
Well, welcome to aga-mcm, where you can discuss your ideas freely with everyone here. We have had several proposals of varying degrees of bakedness over the years. Some have been very easy to accept, some very easy to reject, others difficult to decide on. (It took two years for the board to approve making convention videos!) You have a distinct advantage because your initial proposal is quite straightforward, doesn't have a lot of legal issues, and it can be built on over time.
Repetition is a mother of success so I will keep trying.
What helps the most here is dialog and feedback, appropriate modifications, etc.
For instance, would having galleries of member aquariums overlap, to a certain extent, the purpose of the aquascaping contest? I think so, but I could be wrong.
