I think we all think the help is awesome!! It is nice to have people champion different issues. I think if there is any cautiousness here it is because every year several people offer to do things and then drop the ball. It would really suck to alter the website, poke holes into things and then have things not materialize. Jay-I am not questioning you dedication at all, I have only heard excellent things about you for at least over a year, so I think everyone is very happy that you have come on board and want you to stay. Any extra help, ideas and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. Things just sometimes move slow around the AGA, (and at my job, and my old job etc).
The other issue is that interactive websites have more security issues, so that would be a concern.
No need for Jay to waste his time/effore doing a pilot/or mock up in my opinion, just when we get the convention material, go for it, and then we can work on a format that is acceptable to the AGA.
That is my 2 cents worth. Take it or leave it, Kathy On Thu, 9 Sep 2004, S. Hieber wrote:
If Jay is willing to do th e work of trying to put something together, I think we should encourage his efforts. This does not mean that we necessarily then change the way anything on the AGA website works. But if Jay comes up with something that looks useful, great. At the same time, I would hate for Jay to spend a lot of time on a project only to to ultimately find insufficient acceptance from the Board. So perhaps what could help is for Jay to undertake a pilot form of developing his ideas. Something less ambitious than the full project but that would give the MCM something more tangible to consider. I don't know if a "pilot" version would actually be nearly as much work as a full blown version. Perhaps it is only me, but I'm not so much a Luddite as a nebbish when it comes to "software" ideas and have trouble imagining how the idea will actually look/work in practice or what the maintenance issues might be. Concerning posible substantial changes/additions to the AGA website in the past, one issue has been, if we add this piece are we sure that it will be maintained and by whom? But I really like the interest Jay is showing here and his willingness to commit his personal resources (talent and time). I really like the focus on member/patron impact. And I like pictures too. And for the longer term, this could mean offloading some of the tremedous burden that Erik has been carrying for the AGA website. sh --- Jay Luto <jayluto@hotmail.com> wrote:Erik and AGA Board,I am gathering that you see a larger purpose to ageneral "gallery" than just the annual convention pictures. My intentions are not to push my luck here but rather give constructive feedback. I wasn't suggesting full-blown AGA Forum but rather invest some time on little project - Gallery which could turn out to be important, at least in my opinion. Newest generation of Aqua Hobbyists is very sensitive when it comes to visual effects. I see online Communities struggling just because their Graphic User Interface is not user friendly and lacks creativity. At the same time the less "messy", the more professional. I guess one needs to find that balance. People like to see pictures, put faces with names/nicknames, see aquarium setups and good quality photography work. Internet is extremely powerful tool and it could become very successful if used properly. I'm www.njas.net Webmaster and check statistics on weekly basis. There is always a lot more movement around website, which was upgraded after my arrival as webmaster, after general info or fishroom pictures are uploaded. What I'm trying to say here is that paper / internet advertising strategies are equally important nowadays. The more user friendly, the better for website and AGA organization. Convention Gallery is perfectly fine and above suggestions are long term ideas !!!However, I don't see a need for a full-blowninteractive forumish thing at this point. I would think that the "convention picture gallery" be made entirely with static pages and images at >convention time? You finished with question mark. Are you still considering ?. Please think about it. I was told that Erik and Board are usually looking for detail descriptions when it comes to new project especially one which has WebSite as main subject. I'm not giving up on my ideas, yet. New guy on the block doesn't mean new and useless ideas :). Repetition is a mother of success so I will keep trying. Would you beinterested in new, more"professional" layout (Gallery Software) or you stillagainst it :). I wouldstrongly recommend one. I know people said in thepast that current picturelayout is a bit chaotic and this could bring moretraffic to website as wellas help create more interest in online AGAshop/books/TAG/membership etc. Ifwe work on it now, we could have that implementedbefore AGA and createinterest. I know you are busy with AGA preparationsso I wouldn't mind takinginitiative. Helping even more. Also, how about sending AGA mass email about Comingup attraction - newGallery. This is not a huge project but it willcreated more traffic aroundAGA website and whole organization. In that email youcan also mention NewPhotographer Position and presence at AGA. Somepeople are interested in thisstuff and will definitely spend few minutes browsing"around the website"looking for gallery. If you guys circulating AGA related emails around theAGA Board and you needsome help, scream. I'm here and ready to help out.
