Another thing that happened in Chattanooga that we have to work to avoid is
that once the convention officially started, people who didn't know him were
very reluctant to approach him casually and just talk. We organizers were
purposely holding back to avoid monopolizing his time, since we had had a
chance to spend time with him before the convention. But other people were,
I guess, too shy to just go up and start a conversation. Tomoko is very
capable of handling the translation of a chatty conversation, and Amano is
actually very approachable.

I spent a large bit of yesterday transferring his judging comments and scores to the contest website, and my impression was: "Wow, his comments are dead-on fair, honest, and even respectful of a lot of the mediocre and poor aquascapes...not being too elitist at all!" Many of our "domestic guest judges" have been far more [coughJeffKroppcough] elitist than Amano was. I was very surprised at this, but I shouldn't have been, based on our experience with him in 2001.

Rick, I'm packing up the slide projector to send to you today, UPS ground. I am also including a few extra cables in the package... less stuff for me to take. I removed the bulb & will bring in my carryon with the spare. My suggestion is to just leave the box as is and I'll unpack the whole thing at the convention. Will send entire itemized bill with this as well as the aquascape printing costs, to Ivo when I get the exact shipping.
