3. Have the bidder numbers start at one, but have the lot numbers begin, say, in the 500's. That way the bidder number can not be confused with the lot number. Or, in one club, the seller number begins the lot number for the same reason. Thus, a lot number is always hyphenated. Then lot number 12-406 means seller number 12, and lot number 406.
I was explaining this to Scott after the auction that in Seattle's club, the bidder and seller numbers are the same, and they start at *100* and the lot numbers start at 500 or so. This way, the auction software can't be messed up by swapping the bidder number and the amount of the bid (except on very expensive items). I found in our first trial that this happened all the time ("Three Dollars to bidder number 4" ended up entered as "bidder number 3 bids 4 dollars" on the form). In my program, a non-registered bidder number flags an error and makes you re-enter.
We don't tie the lot numbers by seller, becuase we pre-print and barcode all the labels. It works pretty nicely.
