I also liked Allesia's idea of a person, or group of people who would specifically make it their job to take "newbies" under their wing... particularly if she's offering! This has always been a problem, and we've always had to try to balance getting the work done, wanting to spend some time with each other becausewe ARE friends, and still making sure that we mingle and make new attendees feel welcome. This is an idea that could solve that problem. It would also help with people like Marian. We could even have a "welcome wagon" type hand-out if we had a committee working on it.
This could be tied in with Speaker Hosts. Not so much a Welcome Committee thing but a Host Committee thing. How about, when they register, they have the option of ticking a box that says "This Is My First AGA Convention." Then a note is made on the registration list and a special dot or something put on their badge.
The Host Committee In Charge Of Newbies would meet them when they register and recognize them later, wandering up to them periodically and asking them whether they need anything or have any questions and do they have plans for lunch. Likewise, the newbie would know who to seek out with questions.
Then the person behind the AGA table wouldn't be asked questions that she didn't know the answer to, left feeling stupid because she has no idea.
This data could also be important to track what percentage of people return to our convention and what percentage are so pissed they want nothing more to do with us ever again.
