[AGA-mcm] Re: New fish

At Texas A&M they call freshmen "fish"... perhaps we could tag the firstimers with fish stickers on their badges. Those in the know (host club and AGA members) would then be fast to include them, without them really quite seeing how it happened.

Ann V

This could be tied in with Speaker Hosts. Not so much a Welcome Committee
thing but a Host Committee thing. How about, when they register, they have
the option of ticking a box that says "This Is My First AGA Convention."
Then a note is made on the registration list and a special dot or something
put on their badge.

The Host Committee In Charge Of Newbies would meet them when they register
and recognize them later, wandering up to them periodically and asking them whether they need anything or have any questions and do they have plans for
lunch. Likewise, the newbie would know who to seek out with questions.

Then the person behind the AGA table wouldn't be asked questions that she
didn't know the answer to, left feeling stupid because she has no idea.

This data could also be important to track what percentage of people return
to our convention and what percentage are so pissed they want nothing more
to do with us ever again.

I would still like to know the answer to this question. Also, did ADG
donate or did they just buy Amano's stuff?

I like all those ideas except that I'm not sure it really ties in with
hosting speakers. I think we need a separate person or committee to handle newbies. Their needs will be different, and the hosts for each speaker will
need to be responsible for that one person.

Have no idea about Red Sea, but ADG donated all the driftwood.

Maybe we should send something to all the registrants
*before* the convention plus more use of signs, welcome
wagoneers, etc. Things like,

you don't need to get your registration packet until . . .

You can get your reg packet at . . .

Contacts for info once yu get to the hotel are:
and you can difn them at . . .

Maybe we should do the Banquet Friday night so people can
roam and mingle in one place before the rest of the
convention????? But could hurt sales due to the
one-nighters not attending the banquet.

Good point. Make another note! Remember to include this
info in opening
remarks!<g> The problem is that opening remarks don't
happen until just
before the talks on Friday night. Many attendees have
already been there
for 24 hours at that point. Maybe some signs in the
hospitality suite? I
don't know, other ideas?

They donated, we were told. I don't remember exactly but I
think Senske's donated some nice batches of driftwood.

And I recall seeing a buyer with two or more collections at
the auction.

The one year we did the banquet the first night, it didn't work well.
Besides the one-day folks, we had SEVERAL people who paid for their banquet,
but then missed out on it due to flight/driving problems. Plus, if we're
going to ask our "big" speaker to do a talk at the banquet, it seems sort of
odd having them as the "kick-off".

NEC does have a convention "kick-off" get-together, though. They have a
silent auction, and then some sort of presenation. That might be the
perfect slot for the contest unveiling, and opening remarks, where they
wouldn't need to be sandwiched in among other things.
