Not to beat this dead horse, but I *have* been a judge at martial arts 
competitions where different styles were competing against each other. In 
this situation, I have only my own experience (taekwondo) to fall back on. 
I have no idea whether the judo competitor is performing to judo standards. 
I can only say whether I think the techniques had focus, timing, power, etc.

And it all seems to even out. Rarely do people complain about results once 
they have seen all the competitors. A clear winner is usually obvious. Of 
course, marital artists don't have to give reasons, either. ;-)

Each judge can only do their best. As long as we have a reasonable mix of 
judges each year, it should all even out. Maybe it will differ from year to 
year. I think this will only encourage people to keep trying, because you 
never know--the judges might like you this year!
