Re: [AGA-mcm] New Web site article?

Speaking of fluorite -- I have been going with the low maintenance point of view, and have a 120 (4') that is growing plants nicely -- nothing special, but good growth -- Karen has seen it. I attribute it to the fact that I have about 3- 4" of fluorite, and the light is a standard 2 lamp T5 ceiling troffer, with 2 -- 54 watt t% lamps. Lots and lots of fish -- we're talking well over 100 black ruby barsm lemon tetras, glow light twtras, black phantoms, some pearl gouramis, many rams and lots of cory cats and kuhli loaches. I find it a very pleasing tank.

Seriously, when this the smoke clears a little I *may* actually write something about the experience. As you might expect, of course, the tanks that are faring the absolute BEST are the ones with CO2 (even in low light) or floating Salvinia cover (if we remember to thin it out every few weeks). June Olberding got out of the hobby a little over a year back, and sold off all her stuff at the time, so I added about 8 buckets of used Flourite to various tanks that are now doing amazing on their own. Most notably, a tank of crypts is now thriving being left alone with the flourite. We also have one Rift Lake tank with Julidochromis that's growing a nice crop of grazable algae on the rocks and seems very stable (it's also a 75-gallon tank with the fishload of a breeder's 20).

The only aquaria that aren't doing so well are the sand-bottom shell-dweller tanks & one 45 with Altolamprologus compressiceps, which build up major BGA. Big surprise there, no plants! And the Alto tank surprises me because it's very similar in composition to the Julie tank, except that it's a bit smaller and I think they're not grazers the same way... so perhaps the wrong kind of algae builds up there.

Ahhh... You are doing experiments in low-maintenance planted tanks. I smell an article in there somewhere! (or is that BGA?)<g>

I've sunk to a new low... so busy that I haven't taken in my CO2 for refill even though it's been empty for a month. On the plus side, I got around to cleaning the tanks last weekend. It's become quarterly. I try to beat my copy of TAG arriving.

We could try that with Luis' tank now, if he still has

Hey, on a tangent of that... was thinking of good web
content beyond
reprinting articles to entice members. I notice how
TV, Radio and
magazines (like National Geo) are now including "web
exclusives" that
expand on the printed/spoken/etc content. I really
liked how Cheryl put
up the expanded Elatine article last year. Maybe next
time we have an
aquascape article like Luis', we could do a "See how
this aquascape
progresses on our WEB EXCLUSIVE
http://www.aquatic-gardeners.org/xxxxx.html"; where we
track the tank over
time. Arrange with the author in advance. This is
especially cool for
aquascapes as that is what they're always asking about.
