This is exactly the kind of thing we should be supporting. They aren't asking anything but that we spread the word.I wonder if one of our sponsors would be willing to supply bulbs for purposes of testing?
That's cool, although you'd think that from this e-mail that he has the blessings of me, George, Tom and Elaine. I don't know if George has even said more than 2 words to him, and the last e-mail I sent was "keep me OUT". Why? His research project is to prove that there is no difference in plant growth between 5000K and 10000K bulbs. But folks keep telling him "duh, people already know this. People buy bulbs based on how they want the aquarium to look." His original proposal painted Amano and all the other sellers of aquarium equipment as out to defraud the aquarium public. As I had just briefly replied to a single e-mail of his, I was very surprised when I suddently was being used as a name to rope others in, and not-so-happy to find myself being made one of his "researchers". So I replied and told him I was WAAAAY to busy, but the AGA would probably be delighted to publish results. His reply: "OK, but then you need to find your replacement, and you still need to be an advisor". HUH?
Tom, though thinking we need enthusiastic folks like this guy, has had some pretty verbose scathing replies to him. He gave some scientific reasons why "color temp doesn't matter", but he has also said that such an experiment, to really work, would take years and involve lots of tanks species, and the results just aren't that big of a deal -- there were so many other projects that could debunk some REAL fraud that hurts REAL people (such as Hydrilla pills). Further, Tom suggested that to start out by alienating all of the vendors, some of whom (Amano) have done more to advance the hobby than any of us, is probably not a good idea. A stripped-down proposal (enclosed) was then sent to us the next day without reply.
I'm not saying not to help this guy out & spread the word. I would love to have an article in TAG that shows that color temp doesn't matter. Just be careful of what his true intent is here.
Now, I have a spinoff idea (next message) I think would be fun... - Erik

I have had exhaustive emails with Tom Barr, and a few emails to Erik Olson and George Booth. Elaine Thompson was kind enough to encourage this thing along from the beginning. She will be unveiling the study July 9^th to her San Diego club. The project concerns a simple experiment to hopefully show if higher Kelvin lights, based on the Amano formula of intensity, is actually better than cool whites watt for watt. The research will be set to go from mid January to mid April. Results will get published, and I believe it will start to put some actual science into why we should or shouldnt use higher Kelvin lights. We are hoping to get several dozen or more participants. Lots of plants and fish in tank 18 or deeper will be the criteria. You may not know this, but there is actually no science backing up claims that higher Kelvin lights are any better than CWF. I believe the CFs with higher Kelvin are, especially under the specifics of the test, but this will be the first study of its kind. If you would like I will send you the proposal for your perusal. Just let me know when would be a good time to do so with all that you have going on. Many thanks, Dr. John Apsley 7327 Silent Creek Avenue, SE Snoqualmie, WA 98065 _______________________________________________ AGA-mcm mailing list AGA-mcm@thekrib.com http://lists.thekrib.com/mailman/listinfo/aga-mcm
