Thiel is from CT. At least he used to be. I never met him though I grew up in the Norwalk Aquarium SOciety with Lee Finley and others. Thiel was very well known in the 1980's and early 1990s for his salt water books.
He left CT long ago now. He went somewhere down south... Florida, maybe?I'd forgotten that he was also deeply into the salt water side of things... Probably because my SW experience is even more limited than my cichlid experience.<g>
Thiel had a tendency to self-promote.
That's for sure.<g> He self-promoted himself into the translation as I understand it from Kaspar.
Anyways, back on topic, I agree with Karen that the Optimum Aquarium would be worth redoing for archival/historical purposes but that is about it.
I'm not even sure it's worth reprinting in an archival sense at this point... There are still enough copies floating around that they come up for sale fairly regularly. If someone wants one and puts a word in with Lee, they'll probably have one within a few months. I've waited much longer for better, rarer books.
It was the first book I read when I got into the planted tank thing but I am not sure that it has enough current relevance to warrant a reprint. It does however, have a place in the history of our hobby as the first (IMO) advanced planted tank book based on some scientific principles.
Absolutely. And when you look at it from that perspective, the Dupla slant seems less self-serving. They were really the only game in town... Even Amano was just playing with soda water when the original work was being done by Kaspar and Horst. I know from discussions with Kaspar that they really did believe their theories on why.how laterite worked, and why cables were so important. And they were a lot closer to correct than anyone else at the time.
Everyone in this country was still using blue gravel and Draceana, and wondering why it wouldn't grow.<g> Well, not everyone, there were a few people doing well with low-light plants, but even they were the rareties.
