Actually, it's a combination of author and editor that makes a good 
work... been reading JKRowling's site yesterday, and she talks about that 
a lot how certain things get trimmed with a good editor who brings in an 
external perspective (some peoples' criticism of the last book included 
that she needed a "better" editor because it was too long).

Anyway... just another perspective.
