If we think it is wrong, I think we ought to at least say something. We don't have to pick on anyone, just post a sticky that urges folks to post links to sources rather than post copies, etc. unless the poster has permission from the owner of the image or text.
It is clearly illegal to copy a photo from a book without the permission of the copyright holder. In the case of a book, permission is probably needed from both the photographer AND the publisher. (unless the photographer has sold all rights to the publisher)
I have to admit that I'm not informed about how links and copyright laws work in the USA -- I would guess that the courts interpret the laws such that the end user image isn't an infringing copy if it is temporary. Download to screen is not treatted the same as downloaded to disk or printer.
I am pretty sure links are fine, because all you are doing is giving the viewer the opportunity to navigate away from your site to a site which (hopefully) has permission to use the material.
