The confusion is that there are are three mailing lists. aga-member@thekrib.com was the pre-existing e-mail list used for AGA chatting before the forum. I double-gatewayed it into the subforum "AGA Member". That forum and list almost never gets used and needs to disappear. It has no purpose anymore.
aga-announce@thekrib.com was for occasional announcements. It's not really gatewayed from anything now. It is almost never used, and needs to disappear too.
The final list, the important one, notifies you when ANY post has been made on ANY of the forums: "aga-forums@thekrib.com". This is the so-called "geezer gateway". Nobody on the board/management/forum mods are subscribed to this list, except Scott (and me). This list has been essential for catching spam posts before anyone else reads them. I can't even fathom how Cheryl makes it there before us without being sub'd to the list.

Oh, also Ben, I looked at GWAPA's forum (without registering, though). Thanks for the heads-up on this! They appear to be using phpBB 2.0 (same as AGA's forum currently) -- which means they installed a plugin/mod to do that e-mail trick. I suspect I know which plug-in this is, and we should be able to get it for our upgraded phpbb 3 forum. Do you get the posts as a digest, or one e-mail per post?--

I'm on every mailing list I'm aware of. I get an occasional mail "from someone one the forum"
but no other notifications.

But my point is that we've had the e-mail-the-entire-post feature since we started
the forum. I worked super extra to put in the feature, as it was not part of stock
phpBB. But even with that, our moderators apparently never utilized it & subscribed
to the mailing list. What will be different after we switch to a different method
of delivery? There needs to be something else, don't you think? Maybe a "moderator
training session" to get everyone on board?

The forum GWAPA uses will mail you the text of the posts but not the

This "so called moderator' forgets to log in all the time for the same reason
I think the
geezers like an email list. It comes to them. I would probably never go to
GWAPA or APC either
if they didn't come to me.
I think as long as people could subscribe and get notifications, it wouldn't
matter so much if
they got the pictures and maybe not if they didn't get text. GWAPA is the
only forum of 3-4 I
belong to that sends the text.... I think.

Hi Ben,
I started building the OS image on a new machine today -- the 2.0.22
forum
transferred over without a hitch (which pleasantly surprised me), and I
was able to
mostly convert it to 3.0.6 on the new machine (as a test).
This new version of phpbb seems to have a lot of good stuff built-in:
attachments,
Atom Feeds, and better e-mail subscription. The thing that's really
annoying,
though, is that it won't bloody e-mail the actual text of the posts
(compared to a
feed reader, which will actually show you what's said)... which is why I
did the
geezer gateway to begin with.
If the Atom Feed thing works correctly, I won't be using the e-mail
subscription at
all. I tend to have all my usual websites aggregated under a feed reader
these
days, and that *does* show all the text of the posts.
Lots of stuff didn't transfer over automatically, including the avatars &
color
scheme, so I will have some more work to do... but I think this has given
me hope we
can do the switch-out within the next couple weeks. It is also my hope
that we can
then get all the so-called moderators on the forum to subscribe in one of
these two
ways, so that folks other than Scott and Cheryl answer questions there.

The forums I'm on have newer versions than ours and you are able to
subscribe
to the sections.
When you do, you get an email when there is a new post on those sections
or
you can elect to get
a summary mailed to you daily of new and updated topics. I rarely go
directly
and log into any
forum where I'm a member. I just check the emails I get and follow the
link
back to the
conversation or look at the summaries and pick and choose what I am
interested
in. Every night
I get 3 emails from Aquatic Plant Central if there is a new post or an
update
in the Crypts,
DFWAPC, or NASH sections. Otherwise, I almost never go to APC.
I was just looking at our forum. It will let you subscribe to a single
post,
but not an entire
section of the forum. Can we upgrade our forum to a version that does
this
and encourage
members to subscribe to the various topics?
