Subject: substrate/mounds

Hello,
When creating a mound (little hill) or even sloping a section of the
aquarium substrate, does one also need to build up a mound of
fertilized gravel(gravel/laterite mixture) underneath the specific
mound site?
I figure plant roots will eventually find their way down but just
wanted to check some of the experts.
Thanks,
Fernando
