Cow moss is an undescribed native aquatic moss that has grown in cow troughs in the mid west for as long as there have been cows there. Recently, an aquarist noticed it, and realized that it didn't look QUITE like Java moss, nor QUITE like Fontinalis. It has been seen by the botanical departments of several major universities, and so far, no one knows quite what it is, only what it's not.<g> The growth habit and color are both just a little different from the more familiar aquatic mosses, but it's more a curiosity than anything else. It does have one positive attribute over Java moss in some applications... it tends to maintain in a more cohesive mass, rather then sort of "flowing" all over the tank. Even though it is clearly a temperate species, it tolerates aquarium temperatures without problem. I guess that's not surprising considering how warm a trough in the Midwest summer sun probably gets! It's one of those things where if your not familiar with the other aquatic mosses in the hobby, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. If you ARE familiar with the other ones, this one is clearly different. Karen Karen A.
