if you go to the catfish digest there has been quite a lot of discussion.

seems there are a couple of prevailing positions.

one, that the sharp edges of substrates like Flourite damage the barbells of 
species such as cory's.

but most serious research points to dietary defiencies being the cause rather 
than the substrate.

this is not to be considered a statement of fact but strictly my own 
observations from reading the digest. i have however seen improvenment once i started 
feeding bloodworms and brine shrim, both frozen.
