If you look back at some of the older aquarium books like the original Innes 
Encyclopedia of Tropical Fish, you will note that sand was used in just about 
all of the aqauriums.

An old neighbor of mine used to keep planted tanks with a layer of soil on 
the tank bottom, topped with a layer of sand to keep soil down.

Most playground type sand is composed of silicates which should not alter the 
pH of the aquarium. Do not use aragonite sand found in your local LFS. This 
will alter your pH higher.
