I've read from a post on Planetcatfish from a gentleman that actually 
collects Corys in the wild that most Corys are found on sand or mud, but not gravel 
or other substrates per se, and mostly in areas without much plant matter.  

Personally, I find my cories ADORE sand--they play in it, slide around in it, 
and shift through it.  My only caution is to keep the sand shallow to avoid 
toxic gas buildup (plants help with this).
