OK, Randy, Cheryl, I'm not as smart as many of the others on this list so I typically wait to see if a better answer comes along... I'd point the finger at nitrates first, and general fertilization second. I had hair algae (the long green kind) so bad in the fancy goldfish tank that it turned into dreadlocks (I'm not kidding) from the fish swimming through it. When I moved that fish out and began fertilizing more it rapidly went away. Nitrates were always zero or nearly so in that tank for the fancy goldfish sulked whenever I added nitrate so I kept it very low and with the 38 watts (spiral flourescents) over 10 gallons the lighting was rather high. Taking the nitrates up to 5 -10 ppm made a noticible difference in just a few days. If you have the slightly curly black kind, looks like a man's leg or underarm hair, I have had that in a new tank right after start up and also induced it by massively overdosing phosphates. In the new tank, I brought in rosy barbs, who ate it all in a matter of hours. In the case of the phosphate overdose, it just went away on its own, or maybe I still had the barbs then, I don't recall. Anyhow the rosy barbs eventually developed a taste for anubias nana and java fern (and you hear no fish will eat that!) as well as MTS, and I moved them on to the pet store.
