I refuse to use flourite because it's expensive.
I refuse to use soil because I like to uproot plants and replant them.
I've stopped using substrate fertilizer for that reason too.
My substrate of choice is good 'ol gravel, 1-3mm diameter. I've also
used the fine 1mm gravel, like a coarse sand, and love it. OK, so I'm
still fighting spot algae but I think that's because I've not gotten the
nutrient balance in the water column right. But otherwise the plants are
healthy.
Call me crazy but I think flourite is over-rated.
