Hi Ken,

I ended up building canopies that either sit over the entire tank (4' in 
my case) and/or are suspended from the ceiling.  I wrote up some of these 
many years back at http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/People/Darn .  Back then, 
I used all T8's, but since have replaced some of the T8's with 55w power 
compacts.  I am happy to report that they are quite compatible with the 
original canopy.  And suspending them an inch or so above the tank keeps 
heat down a bit.
