Yes, I also have experience that sometimes the rhizome can resist to rotting
although it is buried. But this does not happen all the time. These
occurences  partially supports the idea that rotting might be due to O2
deficiency rather than light deficiency. If it was due to light, it should
always rot. On the other hand substrates can sometimes be rich enough for
the the rhizome to get enough O2, as Karen described. In those cases the
rhizome under the substrate can survive.
