I can't speak to UG heater cables, I don't consider them neccessary.

As for lighting, there are numerous PC fixtures that would fit your need, AH
supply has retrofits you could use in a DIY hood, or just look on Pet
Solutions under power compact flourescent fixtures.

If you're trying to do things on the cheap, two shoplight fixtures should
sit nicely on a 55, I have 3 of them on a 75, two would give give you 160
watts, I use Phillips Dalight 6500K bulbs. I love them.

I bake driftwood at 200 for an hour, never had any problems, I've also
soaked them in a potassium permanganate solution, but it will darken the
wood, and make sure you rinse thoroughly.

needs to go to sleep and won't until he can lay on me :)
