Re: [AGA-Member] Questions from a Rookie

Chuck's link directly:
http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/index.htm
Also, articles on his website you should read, such as measuring CO2 in a planted tank:
http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/articles.htm
(You are basically using lime/acid rain chemistry to measure the CO2 content indirectly.)
In addition, check out the Krib for articles on CO2/pH/KH/GH chemistry.
This is the Krib's main plant section:
http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/
Under a further subheader from that, this is where to find postings on the chemistry, lots of good articles and links. **Probably the most important place to get started.**

There are a number of things you can add to buffer your pH, and there's recipes out there for hardness and ph buffering, but you'll want to know why people came up with the recipes they use. You'll also need to know what your tapwater is doing before you add anything.(If you have extremely hard water, you may not need to add anything. If your water is very soft, you may end up surprised how much you have to add.)
Hope these are some help to you!

Here is an attempt to answer your CO2 question. Method A is to observe plant and fish health and move slowly to see how the plants respond. Method B is to get 1) a KH test, 2) a pH test, and 3) carbonate (solid bicarbonate...). Use "Chuck's CO2 chart" to determine your CO2 and go from there. Dear AGA members, I just got a compressed gas CO2 system. I know my pH
will start to drop once I turn it on. I'm aware that there are all kinds of
ways to "buffer" the water but I've never used them before and I'm hoping some
of the members can shed light on this for me. If someone can explain the
different ways and anything pertinent you think I need to know. How can one keep a
soft and slightly acidic without the pH dropping too low?
Also, in the last issue of TAG, Volume 18 Number 1, Jan-Mar '05, the last
article mentions a variety of different aquatic mosses. I've search the web a
bit but cant seem to find them. Does anyone know where I can find them?
Also, I just wanted to thank everyone once again who help me last time.
You guys were a big help. I'm hoping the members come through once again.

Thanx, Sincerely, Ilan _______________________________________________ AGA-Member mailing list AGA-Member@thekrib.com http://lists.thekrib.com/mailman/listinfo/aga-member
