Re: Showcase pictures in TAG and other magazines

OK, time to "weigh in" I guess. I think that it would be a shame for another
magazine to "scoop" TAG on the Showcase/Contest, but I leave timing issues
up to others. We _can't_ hold Dave G. off indefinately, it just isn't fair
to him or to the Showcase/Contest. This material is going to be "newsworthy"
for only a short period of time, allow that to pass and _nobody_ will be
interested in printing it.

By now you all probably also know that Kaspar Horst is interested in doing
an article on the Showcase/Contest for Aquarium Heute, to be published in
both the German and Italian editions of his magazine. Let's get as much
mileage out of this as we can and to do that we've got to stike while the
iron is hot and interest is high.

Now, regarding the material I would _like_ to see in TAG - I have prepared a
preliminary version of a Contest Prize List and the latest version of it is
online in an HTML version at
http://www.interlog.com/~jpurch/webs/TAG/Default.htm. Using the font sizing
info Mary has provided, this comes out to being 6 pages long when formatted
as a MS Word document. As for pictures, there are 6 Categories X Win, Place
& Show in each one = 18 aquascapes which would be _nice_ to see in print,
plus Best of Show, possibly on the cover. Now, this would be _nice_, but it
isn't absolutely necessary - if cost is a _real_ concern we could go with
just the 1st place winners (six photos) in color and the rest in B&W.
Alternatively, maybe we don't need to print all of the winning entries -
there might not be much interest in the 3rd place Articifical Aquascape.

I don't know how much time would be required by Erik to produce "camera
ready" artwork for Mary for this - the images are probably as ready as they
need to be right now.

The Prize List can be delivered to Mary's inbox on the 30th, as can the
"article".

If printing the photos in this issue would cause unreasonable delays - might
I suggest that you forego pictures altogether (except perhaps for the cover)
and just print my "Intro" and the Prize List. I can always refer people to
the web site to look at the pretty pictures.

The "article" to accompany the images and the prize list is not going to be
extensive, nor very "deep". I have only just begun to sketch it out, but I
expect that it will be very similar to the final Introduction Page on the
web site - I doubt that it will run to more than a couple of pages. My prime
imperative here is to just get this out the door and into people's hands. I
don't intend to analyze the entries or comment on them - that's what we had
judges for and the 4 people who are doing the judging are far better
qualified than I am to discuss things like that - and those sorts of
articles can very easily be published AFTER this initial one.

My initial article will merely cover the geographic areas where our entries
have come from, and say a few words about the wide range of styles that were
submitted. I would also like to thank some folks and invite people to visit
the web site to look at all of the images and perhaps buy a copy of the
CD-ROM for leisurely study. Clean, short, simple. Nothing deep, nothing
philosophical.
