> Hoboy. Gosh, if I were Claus or Ole, I'd think twice about even > approaching the AGA now. I think I can square it with Claus. I have already sent him one appology for a previous communication from Mary to him on this subject that I didn't bother to bring to the SC... In it she was "merely" questioning whether he had given the article to both her and grumbling about it. > I understand part of where Mary is coming from (he did sort of "promise" > the article to the AGA once it had been published overseas, as > acknowledged by Mary's editing out the crucial data in my notes from last > year's NEC convention, and he did make it sound like it was exclusive, or > at least "first", at the time). I'm sure there was some kind of screwup, > like Dave probably came and talked to him and got him to agree to publish > it in PAM too. How long has Mary been sitting on this article? I know that he promised it ti TAG, but I heard nothing about exclusivity... maybe because I already knew that Claus NEVER gives an article to one publisher exclusively. I'm sure that Dave asked for the article. But Claus would give it to any editor who asked for it. That's the way he works. > Nonetheless, for Mary to say the article is worthless since it's been > published elsewhere is not only insulting, but it's also invalid. > Consider that over half, maybe 3/4 of the articles in TAG are now reprints > from other journals. I agree. > So what do we do, ask Mary to apologize to the two authors? Replace Mary > as editor and merge with PAM to save it from bankruptcy (as per Dave's > note that arrived curiously at the same time?) :) OK, just kidding on the > last one. PAM isn't bordering on bankruptcy. It's going pretty much as could be expected. Dave knew he'd be shouldering a good part of the finances initially. He's just trying to reduce the deficeit. He called me yesterday and asked me what I thought of raising subscription rates, and whether subscribers would go along with it. I said that I didn't have a really good feel for it one way or the other. I suggested that he broach the subject with a number of people whose oppinions he valued, and see what they thought. Obviously, you were among that group. The timing had _nothing_ to do with this other issue. As far as I know, he doesn't even know that Mary's got her knickers in a twist again. Certainly I would have expected him to mention it when we talked yesterday if he did know. I'll forward both Mary's original letter and Claus' response plus my follow-up to Claus to the SC list so that you guys know exactly who has said what.
