Re: I second motions 01-01 and 01-02

Normally, the next step is discussion... and to provide opportunities for
amendments to a motion. At least that is what Robert would say. :-)

For motion 01-02 (Amano), the motion is clearcut and I vote yes to make it
unanimous.

Not so for 01-01. I would like to offer some discussion and an amendment.
Despite the fact that my opinions currently seem to be in the minority,
and I just saw that 4 of the 5 SC already voted yes, I will offer a few
thoughts anyway.

Re: motion 01-01 (appoint TAG chair)
>MY MOTION IS THAT:
>AGA establish a Publications Committee, the Chairperson of which will be
the Editor of TAG. As Chairperson the Editor can also appoint others for
the committee, and to handle separate tasks and interests as required.
>The position of Editor of TAG be paid $650 per issue of TAG.

As I said before,

"Editor" can mean multiple jobs, ideally involving multiple people. The
jobs include
*getting/selecting articles (including ones with good illustratations)
  - what Dave called "cowboy"
*layout - AGA currently has some helpers here, but can probably do better
*copy and technical editing
*production/printing
*Managing editor to oversee the entire process
One of the downfalls of PAM was one person doing too many jobs. It also
eventually burned me out as TAG editor.

I see that the ACA has divided up the publication of BB along similar
lines. So, my amendment is that David's suggestion of editor getting paid a
certain fee be modified to mean: editor and related TAG staff. Is there a
second?

I would not be adverse to appropriately dividing the proposed fee of $650
among the different workers. However, i still think that non-monitary
inducements can be just as, if not more effective. As I previously
suggested, I would rather award "green stamps" to TAG staff. Same for
submitted articles and photos. Points could be used to get discounts on AGA
ventures or to get outright items from store. If we pay staff AND authors,
won't we be back in the same negative cash flow as Gomberg? Any Discussion?

>The Board of Directors will decide among ourselves who we would like to
see in the position, and then offer it to that person.

Good idea. Wouldnt want this to be a rash decision and to repeat my
mistake. :-)

>
>As a separate thought and not part of the motion I have been thinking that
the Editor decide and implement the new and improved TAG, including at
his/her discretion the following
> * establish an annual budget for TAG
> * decide whether and how much TAG would pay for articles

I think that needs to be AGA policy, not "editorial perogrative" - because
these costs impact AGA budgets and TAG cash flow. A possible exception is
that TAG editor budget be subdivided further to paying staff, authors and
photographers. Still, a budget of green stamps to me is more tempting.

Erik- does ACA still have paid staff. Has it started to pay for its articles?

> * have regular columns, such as a Beginner's Corner, a Plant of the
Issue, etc.
> * solicit advertising from the same folks who advertised in PAM

Definitely, a yes.
